Which material should I choose for my tote bag? How should I print my tote bag?

Non-Woven Bags are made of PP (polypropylene). Every component of the bag - surface (printed film), lining, edge binding and even the handles - are made of PP. This creates a pure product made from a single material. This supports the recycling concept. Pure materials are most easily and frequently sorted into recycling streams in automated sorting facilities after disposal. Thus we're making a huge step toward a recycling economy, which is understandably high on the political agenda. The bags themselves contain about 50-60% recycled material by default.

As a non-woven bag manufacturer, we often first calculate cotton bags for our customers, then non-woven bags in the second round.

Among various textiles, cotton definitely has the advantage of brand recognition and is often mentioned first.

Cotton is a renewable resource. This makes it appealing. It carries the assumption of being environmentally friendly.

We may be familiar with non-woven fabrics and often handle them, but we don't know much about non-woven materials. Yet we frequently carry this textile in our hands or even wear it directly against our skin. Typically we don't have a common name for this textile: We don't associate non-woven, the fiber fleece made from PP, PE or PET (e.g., from used PET bottles) with this material. Here, when printing non-woven bags, this becomes very relevant in choosing the bag material.

During our consultation, after all price comparisons, customers at bagobag often order the more affordable printed non-woven bags. Printed non-woven bags have a reliable price advantage over printed cotton bags. The decisive factor for the price advantage isn't sewing, country of origin, or lack of fairness, but rather the global market price of the material. Sewing, printing, additional costs and transportation follow standards. Their costs are essentially the same for both bag types and thus negligible for this comparison.

First and foremost, the material thickness has a tremendous impact on the bag quality and appearance of non-woven bags. If the PP bag material is chosen too thin for cost reasons, it looks cheap and the non-woven bags may tear somewhere under point loads. Bags made from thin textiles are never durable in general. Fabric bags made from non-woven with a weight below 80 grams per square meter quickly disappoint. The lasting impression of the promotional product then becomes disappointment rather than feeling gifted. Therefore, bagobag only offers non-woven fabric bags for promotional product buyers starting from 80 g/m².

My Tote Bag - Which Thickness or Grammage Should I Order for My Purpose?

For trade show bags, promotional bags, marathon sports backpacks, non-woven drawstring bags, and giveaways in large quantities, you can safely use 80 g/m² material. Unless you want to be more exclusive or premium in your promotion, more durable in continued use, or stand out from competitors - then order 100 g/m² thickness.

For souvenir bags, city marketing and tourism, a material thickness of at least 100 g/m² or higher should be used, especially if you choose uncoated non-woven bags with print.

Accountant bags and document tote bags made from non-woven for transporting files should be made from 120 g/m² or 150 g/m² material for a consistently good impression. We can also build a sturdy base into your non-woven bags. Reinforcing the edge fold gives the bag a taut shape around the opening.

Shopping bags, shoppers made from non-woven require higher stability through material thickness. Choose a grammage between 120 g/m² and 150 g/m².

Non-woven bags with zippers, e.g. cosmetic bags, sports bags, ball bags should not be designed with less than 100 g/m² material thickness.

My Shopping Tote Bag - Natural Fiber or Synthetic Fiber? What's Better for Me?

Food, medicine, cosmetics - Non-woven synthetic fibers are among other things grease- and water-repellent and hygienic.

Cotton and pollutants. Most cotton comes from conventional agriculture. Unless the cotton is explicitly from organic cultivation, it is not environmentally friendly. Conventional cotton bags still have the image of being eco-friendly. Upon closer inspection, however, both in agriculture and textile production, third-world problems are evident (water consumption, food competition, wage dumping). Due to intensive cultivation, such as cotton plants, and general environmental pollution, residues can unfortunately occur in natural materials like cotton, jute or hemp. Synthetic fibers are less likely to contain residues from pesticides, fertilizers or other environmental toxins.

Cotton fibers are natural fibers and without chemical aftertreatment not resistant to grease, rain or dirt. Permanent tote bags made from non-woven have exactly this advantage - even without being treated inside or outside or specially coated.

Non-woven bags are coated when for example a photo motif is to be presented. Cotton cannot be film-coated or printed with photo motifs. Such designs are frequently used in today's designs however.

You can wash cotton bags. Non-woven bags don't need washing while in use because their fibers are grease- and water-repellent. Cotton bags lose their charm after washing.

Standing in the rain. With the bag. The cotton bag absorbs moisture and transfers it to the bag contents - even when you place the bag on a wet surface. In the rain, the consumer is better off with a non-woven bag. Uncoated PP non-woven bags don't have a completely closed surface and let moisture through after some time. However, this happens significantly later than with a cotton bag.

Recycling. Non-Woven Tote Bag Made from Synthetic Fiber or Cotton Bag. Pure and Therefore Eco-Friendly - What Ultimately Stands Better in Recycling?

In the EU, at least in German-speaking countries, there is reliably very good plastic recycling and material cycles. These guarantee that every plastic item, whether as fiber material or in another form, will cross your path again later. Non-woven is no longer wasted today because recyclable plastic is hard cash. At the end of the life cycle, non-woven PP bags are a well-recyclable material.

Non-woven bags from us already have a high recycled content in the standard material used. After use, the bags, being pure, are a stroke of luck for recyclability. They can be easily sorted as a whole in recycling and are thus gladly reused.

If you order plastic bags made from non-woven from us and the bags are properly disposed of after final use (yellow bin), then the material cycle starts anew. So this material doesn't need to be compostable.

When a cotton bag has served its purpose, it cannot be recycled but is typically incinerated as residual waste.
