Information about FSC

What is FSC?

FSC ("Forest Stewardship Council") is a worldwide certification system for the implementation of sustainable forest management. Sustainable means here: The consideration of social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations. These criteria are verified by independent institutions. Annual inspections ensure reliability. Transparent and seamless tracking of certified resources is the core element of FSC. We also check the certificates of our suppliers before each project and document exactly which paper we use for your bag.

What do the different FSC labels mean?

FSC paper is available in different categories. So that you know what your bag is made of, we briefly explain the meaning behind our labels here.

FSC 100%

Bags with this label are made of paper that comes 100% from FSC-certified forests.

What does 100% mean and why is this paper so special?

Paper products such as paper bags consist of different components. These components are manufactured or further processed by various players. Strict regulations apply to all manufacturing steps for FSC products. This starts with selecting an FSC-certified forest. With this label, the paper comes from 100% FSC-certified wood from appropriately certified forests. Strict regulations also apply in the further processing of the pulp into the finished paper. All steps must be carried out by tested and certified actors. This guarantees the greatest possible transparency and sustainability for products with the FSC 100% label.

The official name is then: “[Product type] from exemplary managed forests”.

FSC mix x%

At least 70% FSC-certified paper or post-consumer recycled material is used here. In our system we note exactly how many percent of FSC-certified material is contained in an FSC mix.

The official name is: “[Product type] promotes good forest management”.

FSC-Recycled and FSC-Recycled x%

FSC recycled paper is produced by using strictly controlled FSC waste paper. To date, 100% FSC-recycled papers have been rare because it is difficult for our recycling cycles to really separate waste according to type.

Why is that?

For example, FSC paper ends up in your wastebasket together with other paper products. When you empty it, throw it in your paper trash can - along with all other paper products in your household. Finally it is picked up by the garbage disposal and ends up in an even larger waste paper container. This leads to FSC paper being mixed with unsustainably sourced paper products when recycled.
For FSC, complete documentation of the origin of the material used is the central testing criterion. If FSC paper products are disposed of together with other paper products, subsequent separation is almost impossible.

This means that so far FSC paper waste from industry has been particularly suitable for FSC recycled paper.

As with any recycled paper, the waste paper is first cleaned, de-inked and processed into fiber pulp. This pulp is then processed back into paper. For paper that meets FSC standards for recycled paper, each of these steps must be fully documented.

This means that no new trees are allowed to be felled for FSC recycled paper, as it is made exclusively from recycled FSC material. The minimum requirement here is also: 70% of the recycled paper bag must consist of recycled FSC-certified materials.

The official name is: “[Product type] made from recycled material.”
Many of our customers have already chosen FSC-certified paper bags:
